Though it took a little longer this year, I finally found the song to bring my “Christmas tears”. Without fail, as I hurry around all December long, in between work and home, scurrying around town and running errands I usually have at least one moment where I come to a screeching halt (at least in the emotional sense) upon hearing a special Christmas song. This happened several times last year… to the point I even contemplated why I was such an emotional wreck. Almost every other song had me tearing up and praising the wonder of the Christmas season. I really experienced Christmas in my heart last year.

I was beginning to worry this year that I would never really have that moment. After all, we’re in the single digit countdown to Christmas Day, and I’m feeling kind of numb to all that is around me. As strange as it may seem, I like having this little breakdown every year. It’s like God and I are trying to have a conversation all month long and I can’t hear him over the blaze of activity that this season brings. But there is a moment. Just one moment. Where the clouds part and all the craziness around me dies down, and I hear Him. I hear him speaking to me in that one song.

I’m very happy to say that I had that moment this morning. Upon hearing this song, I smiled, started to cry and sighed in happiness. I hear you speaking to me and I got the message.

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
version by Casting Crowns

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And mild and sweet their songs repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men

And the bells are ringing (Peace on earth)
In my heart I hear them (Peace on earth)
Like a choir singing (Peace on earth)
Peace on earth, good will to men

And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men

But the bells are ringing (Peace on earth)
Like a choir singing (Peace on earth)
Does anybody hear them? (Peace on earth)
Peace on earth, good will to men

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor does He sleep
(Peace on earth, Peace on earth)
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men

Then ringing singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men

For the bells are ringing (Peace on earth)
Like a choir singing (Peace on earth)
And in hearts we’ll hear them (Peace on earth)
Peace on earth, good will to men

Do you hear the bells they’re ringing? (Peace on earth)
They’re like the angels singing (Peace on earth)
Open up your heart and hear them (Peace on earth)
Peace on earth, good will to men

Peace on earth, Peace on earth
Peace on earth, Good will to men
